Where to Stay on Mactan Island: Resorts, Hotels & Neighbourhoods.

Mactan has four distinct accommodation zones, each with different priorities. The resort strip is beautiful but isolated. Newtown is modern and lively. Maribago offers mid-range value near cultural sites. Budget areas exist near the airport but feel disconnected. This guide breaks down where to stay based on your trip style.

The Quick Version

Resort strip: ₱10,000–25,000+/night, luxurious, isolated. Newtown: ₱3,000–8,000/night, urban, restaurants everywhere. Maribago: ₱2,000–4,000/night, quieter, access to guitar factories. Budget (near airport): ₱400–1,500/night, basic, functional.

The East Coast Resort Strip

The iconic Mactan resort experience. A 10km stretch of upscale hotels along the northeastern coast, from Shangri-La Mactan in the north down to Crimson Resort and Spa in the south. Each resort is its own isolated bubble with restaurants, pools, private beaches, and water sports.

Properties & Prices

Honest Assessment

The resort strip is beautiful but isolated. You’re insulated from real Mactan. Restaurants are expensive. Getting to Cebu City is a 30–40 minute Grab ride. Island tours and dive trips are pre-arranged and pricey. If your priority is luxury and relaxation without leaving the property, it’s perfect. If you want to experience local culture, food, or nightlife, this isn’t the area.

Resort Insider Tip

All resort strip hotels offer dive certification courses. Book in advance, especially in peak season (December–March). Rates are usually ₱3,000–5,000 for a 2-day certification course.

Mactan Newtown

Lapu-Lapu City’s modern development zone in central Mactan. A planned urban area with condo-hotels, a man-made beach, shopping mall (Island Central), restaurants, and nightlife. This is the emerging hub for younger travellers and digital nomads.

Accommodation

Mostly mid-range condominiums and business hotels. Rooms from ₱3,000–8,000/night depending on quality. SM Prime’s Oasis Condo is one popular option. Numerous smaller condo-hotels offer studio and one-bedroom units at ₱2,500–5,000/night.

What Makes It Unique

Newtown has a functioning local life. Actual restaurants, coffee shops, street food vendors (not resort food courts). SM Seaside City Cebu mall is here (ATMs, shops, restaurants). Grab works perfectly. You’re not isolated, but you’re not in the rough parts of Lapu-Lapu City either. It’s the sweet spot for travellers who want comfort without resort bubble experience.

Honest Assessment

Newtown is the better choice if you care about food and nightlife. Yes, the man-made beach is less impressive than the resort strip’s natural beaches, but the tradeoff is worth it. You’re 20 minutes from Cebu City by Grab, 15 minutes from the resort strip if you want to day-trip there. Hotels are comfortable but not luxury. Expect contemporary comfort, not 5-star indulgence.

Maribago Area

A quieter, more local zone south of central Mactan. Known for its guitar-making factories and proximity to boat launches for island tours. Mid-range beachfront hotels and casual guesthouses.

Accommodation

Mostly small hotels and family-run places. Rooms from ₱2,000–4,500/night. Less polished than Newtown condos, but friendly and authentic. Blue Lagoon Resort and similar properties are typical of the area.

Why Choose Maribago

If you’re interested in seeing Mactan guitar-making (a legitimate craft tradition), this is the area. Boat tours to Hilutungan and Nalusuan islands depart from nearby ports. Prices are slightly cheaper than Newtown. The vibe is more local and less touristic.

Trade-Offs

Less dining variety. No mall nearby. Grab still works, but it’s slightly more remote. Good for 2–3 day stays focused on island hopping. Less suitable if you want robust nightlife or diverse restaurants.

Budget Accommodation: Airport Area

South of the airport, toward Opon and Basak. Cheap guesthouses, hostels, and budget hotels. Rooms from ₱400–1,500/night. These are purely functional — basic rooms, shared bathrooms, minimal amenities.

Why You Might Stay Here

Ultra-budget travel. Flights arriving late or departing early. Passing through Mactan en route to Bohol or other islands. Short stays before ferry connections.

Honest Take

The area feels disconnected. You’re not near restaurants, activities, or the beach. It’s purely a crash pad. Grab works fine, but there’s little reason to spend more than a night here. Skip this zone unless you’re budget-constrained and only staying overnight.

Quick Comparison: Where to Stay on Mactan

Packing Smart for Mactan

Pack a lightweight travel pillow if you’re budget or mid-range staying — room pillows can be thin. Packing cubes help organize luggage in smaller rooms. Resort strip hotels provide excellent amenities, so minimal packing is fine there.
